It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

I am having a hard time concentrating on what I read and I am worried about it. Lately, I’ve been falling asleep every time I start reading FFS!  I just can’t. I also don’t enjoy it when I’m in a lot of pain. My mind isn’t retaining anything and I can’t seem to concentrate. I fear to have a stroke. I don’t know what is going on physically, but reading is really hard to do. I also have to go over things 2 or 3 times just to be able to comprehend what I’m missing. I don’t want to say that the books I read are garbage because that would be an insult to the author’s hard work and dedication and to my ability as a reader probably, but I’m not enjoying anything.

¶ I guess what I want to say is I am greatly affected by what goes into my mind and it is important to feed our minds with good books and not junk. Why do people fall into reading slumps? Speaking about cancer in a horror story

“This place, this fanciful realm, it’s crept into you through your brainholes. And I’m connected to your brain, to every part of you, really. I have so much access now. I see so many things. I’m everywhere and everyone.”

—Exquisite Corpse Episode 8
My brain is generally overactive and it doesn’t work as effectively in processing certain things. Idk, I have too many unanswered questions related to my health right now. I need answers.

What I added to My Shelf

Was I wise to buy these two books? Idk, I really wanted to read a Cormoran Strike novel again and The Name of the Wind kept popping up. I thought the synopsis was interesting and I just might have to get the audio for this one.

¶ I was really hoping to get Muse of Nightmares (although I have the audiobook). I think I will wait for it to come out in paperback because it is just too dang expensive and the library has too many holds on it. I have to reread Strange the Dreamer also. That was one book I couldn’t wrap my head around! I lost interest over the god spawn up on the hill.

I also won a book of choice from Angela’s Guilty Pleasures during the FraterfestRAT. I chose Cecy Robson #1 Sealed With A Curse, which I’m looking forward to because I had received an e-arc of Gone Hunting and I really liked it.
¶ I haven’t got any new arcs from Netgalley but I still need to read the eleven I have waiting to be read. Is it a coincidence there are 11 more days until Halloween?

¶ I am 2 books away from completing my Goodreads Reading Challenge for this year and we still have Christmas books to read! I joined in a Christmas Readathon with Just Another Girl and Her Books. I encourage everyone to participate in that as well.

Exquisite Corpse A Serial Box Original Horror Story

Sanguine Woods shared a FREE Horror story made up of 10 episodes that I listened and read.  If you didn’t have anything better to do but waste your time with this then I recommend it. It was just okay but “I would HAVE to read/listen to it over and over to come to a better appreciation. That’s how slow my mind works.” My favourite episode is Ep. 8 written by Stephen Kozeniewski. I suppose because it was the most exciting with the most action but what a poor old coot the exquisite corpse was! He had a family and everything! You can read all about that in episode 4.

I hope everyone is safe and in good health. What epic books have you read this week?

Shot By Bears

That’s hilarious. I mean do bears even have opposable thumbs?

  1. Health issues and stress mess with your concentration – I know (she who feels it knows it). Sorry to hear you’re struggling just now, hope you find some clarity, healing, and a book that holds your attention.

Thank you, I can use words of encouragement like yours. I just got back from soaking in the hot tub. No swim today boo. It was kids swimming lessons and I did not know that.

  2. I’ve definitely had weeks in which nothing seems to grab me. Maybe we need to get more rest. Thanks for sharing your books, and for visiting my blog. I’m curious about the Robert Galbraith books.

They are good. Cormoran Strike is a murder investigator who is up my alley and I hope you like him as well. Read it! I enjoyed Cuckoo’s Calling and Silkworm so far.

I’ve heard so much about The Name of the Wind but never gotten around to it. I hope you enjoy your reads!

Ooh some freakiness. that witch picture- yikes. 🙂 I hear you on the reading thing- I have that problem sometimes, nothing sticks or gets my attention. And if I read at night I often fall asleep haha. Seriously though- I hope you get answers to your health questions soon, it’s always hard when we’re worried about things, for sure.

Take care and hope you have a super week.

Thank you very much. My witch name is Cryptic Wand lol. I love those tag things, Anyway, I wish people would share their answers to the Halloween tag I posted. I thought it would be fun but perhaps they missed it?

      1. Greg says:

Ooh I think I missed it thinking it was a book challenge or something? Okay it says I’m gonna be vaporized by Bigfoot, so… yikes?

Cryptic Wand is awesome. Wait, that’s not YOU dressed up as a witch in that pic is it? Because it’s kind of a terrifying picture lol.

Lol, vaporized by bigfoot? lmao! That’s funny, dude. Why do I think these are funny? haha. That witch isn’t me but I wish it were.

  5. I’m sorry you’re having a tough time, both with your health and concentrating on reading. I’ve been in a reading slump recently, too; it’s really frustrating.

The Name of the Wind is great, and the audio is a wonderful way to read it (it’s how I first read it.) Just be aware that it takes you a little while to get into the story. There’s a “frame” story that seems a bit confusing at first. Once Kvothe starts telling the story of his childhood and youth, it really picks up. So try to stick it out through the first several chapters, even if it seems confusing. Things will make more sense eventually. 🙂

I hope you have a better week and find a book that appeals to you.

Thank you so much for your insights to the name of the wind. I was intrigued when I read the synopsis on audible so maybe I will get the audiobook as well. You also have a great week!

  6. I hope you figure out what’s wrong soon, so you can take the proper steps for taking care of yourself. Congrats on being so close to your Goodreads goal. I met mine just recently and really feel a lot less stressed about picking up all the books as a result. Oh no, I’m going to be stabbed by clowns! What a horrifying way to die. Wishing you a better week!

I think it’s my chronic back pain that is messing with my mind. It’s been pretty bad lately. I am a big wuss when it comes to pain. I fear pain. Stabbed by clowns isn’t so bad though right? It could be worse like being tickled to death. I hate clowns though.

  7. Sorry you’re having a tough time. I have depression, and when it gets really bad, I can’t concentrate on books at all. My brain doesn’t absorb information and I keep reading the same page over and over. I hope your slump ends soon. Congrats on almost hitting your Goodreads goal! I’m way behind on mine.

That sounds like me lol. Keep reading the same page over and over. Thanks so much for visiting and congrats on your win!

Fatigue, stress and pain can seriously alter your concentration. I hope you feel better soon. And I agree that being choosy about which books we read does make a difference in the reading experience. Enjoy your new books!

I will also be shot by bears! My circumstances are different, but I understand having reading slumps. I haven’t properly read in the better part of a week now. When you mind is centered on something else, it can be difficult to focus on reading. Hang in there!

  10. I don’t think I’d do serials very well. I’d definitely have to wait for them all to come out because my reading brain doesn’t work in installments 🙂

    1. Jackie says:

Are you talking about the Exquisite Corpse? Because it is complete. I mean they are all out to read. I haven’t checked if it is still free though but ya. It’s something for Halloween anyway and it’s kinda creepy so if you are into that sort of thing, I’d say it’s okay to listen to it.

  11. Aymee says:

‘Stabbed by Spock’… that’s highly illogical!

I’m listening to The Cuckoo’s Calling right now and am enjoying it. I’m also halfway through The Name of the Wind and am loving it as well. I hope you like it, too!

I love the Cormoran Strike series. I have the latest one and can’t wait to read it.

Lethal White? I am going to wait until it is in paperback. I am glad to hear you love it.

  15. I’m sorry you are struggling right now. Don’t try too hard to push yourself! Maybe this means you should take a break from reading? (I know its awful! but maybe audiobooks? You can relax and listen and let your brain rest a bit?) I hope you find the answers you need!

In other news, I will be crushed by my evil twin this halloween so that should be interesting 😉 I love that tag!
