When was the last time you wrote something substantive — a letter, a story, a journal entry, etc. — by hand? Could you ever imagine returning to a pre-keyboard era?
In Response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Pens and Pencils.”
I keep a written journal. My last handwriting entry was on January 1st, 2015. It’s a little messy, I won’t argue. I type more than I write. My writing is stiff and a little jittery but nothing that a little practice couldn’t fix.
For me, it’s not about the messy writing but what I write. Past journals were filled with a chronology of desperate times living in an abusive relationship. I wish I kept them but I threw them all out because I was scared, the one I’d been writing about, might read them and I didn’t want him to. After he got a hold and read one journal entry, where I innocuously mentioned he looked “scuzzy” *cough*, he got so angry with me and kicked me in the jaw. My head was ringing for awhile after. It’s the reason I have two broken teeth. Recently I had to get one of them pulled because the roots were dead, all because of that traumatic blow to the jaw.
Anyway I don’t blame you for finding it hard to hear I was abused but don’t be too concerned about it. Honestly, I am fine and the journals I kept weren’t all that bad . Writing is a scary thing sometimes especially when you try to be 100% honest and true to yourself. Could I imagine things returning to a pre-keyboard era? Yes I can but I enjoy typing on my blog and keyboard. It’s a little different because everyone on the internet can read it unless yours is private. Think about the environment. With all this technology are we any smarter or better for it? It may be that with pen and pencil we saved our brains from too much garbage and useless knowledge but with technology we saved trees? Aren’t our brains worth more than trees? I sure hope so .
